The construction of man-made causeways for accessibility by road between the islets from the 1970s altered natural water courses so much that the stability of some islets was severely affected, and more recently the effects on the low-lying atolls of global warming and climate change whole islets continue to disappear. A lone mangrove tree stands where once there was an islet covered with vegetation and surrounded by mangroves.
