The Moolort Plains has been largely cleared of natural vegetation since the arrival of settlers in colonial times and suffered in the wake of these human and agricultural impacts. Lack of rain fall is countered by the Great Artesian Basin underground but farmers have to irrigate, use artificial fertilizers and additional stock feed to make any kind of success.
