The Goulburn River is one of Victoria's very important watercourses and one of the few that will flow with any degree of certainty. The current State Govt solution to Melbourne's water problems is to divert (steal) farmer's irrigation water supply from the Goulburn River and pipe it to Melbourne's Sugarloaf Reservoir. This project is fraught with controversy and a major component in Australia's water wars. Regarding water supply the State could realistically sustain a population of about 1.5million it is currently about 5million
