On Funafuti father and child walk through seasonal flood waters to get to their home in a squatter settlement formed by outer-island migrants, the taisala or 'borrow pits' were made when the US military dug huge amounts of rocks and soil in order to build the runway during WW11. The population of the captial island has increased 10 fold since and people are forced to live in these areas
