On Funafuti, the number of imported motor vehicles increases steadily especially after the sealing of the road in 2002 and despite a heavy Government levy on used cars. The vehicles are of some use when no longer operating stemming the force and flow of the extreme tides, protecting homes and villages at the edge of the lagoon.
