| Every year on November 25 Vaitupu people celebrate the final payment of an historical kaitalafou or debt of 13,000 pounds in 1883 to rogue palagi traders. This year the outer-islanders gather with relatives now living on Funafuti for feasting, sports, games, singing - and a fishing competition. The losers of the competition were caked with mud by the victors as per tradition then gaily scorned while they were soaking themselves clean in the lagoon. |
