| At about 4500 people the main settlement of Funafuti has about 10 times the population it supported in pre-European times. Nowadays people sustain an equally modern and traditional way of life and ferns used for decorating the falekaupule at times of celebration have to be gathered from Papaelise an uninhabited islet across the lagoon. |
