Flying into Funafuti in a small plane after hours of nothing but the vast Pacific one gets the feeling of the island's vulnerability to the ocean immediately. On the ground another kind of threat becomes apparent, that the spoils of modernistion may just as imminently inundate the land. Local people, in the manner of forced adaptation combat frequent storms and high tides by positioning dumped cars on the edge of the lagoon in an effort to protect their homes and villages.
