Tuvalu Maritime Training Institute

The institute is on it's own islet northwest of the capital settlement of Funafuti. It trains young Tuvaluan sailors so that they can work abroad on foreign vessels. The annual remiittances sent back to Tuvaluan families from the seafarers are between A$5 - 8 mil a significant sum when set against the variable but small GDP of the tiny nation. 1000 seafarers have graduated since the institute offically opend in 1979
