Every year on November 25 the final payment of a historical kaitalafu or debt of 13,000 pounds in 1883 to rogue palagi traders is celebrated by Vaitupu people. This year people from the outer island gather with relatives now living on Funafuti for feasting, sports games, singing and a fishing competition. The loosers of the competition were caked with mud by the victors as per ancient tradition then gaily scorned while they were soaking themselves clean in the lagoon.
