The Hon Toaripi Lauti Tuvalu's first Prime Minister from Independence in 1978 until 1981. The son of a Funafuti pastor he was named after a village in PNG. where he was born in 1930. Following tertiary education in New Zealand he took up teaching at King George V High School in the capitial of the then colony of the Gilbert and Ellice islands in Tarawa. He worked in industrial relations for BPC on Nauru before taking up politics in Tuvalu in 1974 leading his country though separation and independence. He's pictured with his grand-daughter.
